High mountain roads close for months each winter and reopen on dates that vary from year to year. The decision is operational rather than seasonal, and it follows a clear cost and safety logic.

Clearing a high pass is a continuous task

Snow does not fall once and stop. A pass road must be cleared repeatedly through the winter, and drifting can refill a cleared section within hours in strong wind.

Keeping such a road open therefore requires machinery and crews stationed nearby for the whole season, not an occasional visit after a storm.

Where an alternative route exists through a valley or a tunnel, that permanent commitment rarely makes sense for the traffic the pass would carry.

Avalanche exposure is the harder problem

Many pass roads cross slopes that release avalanches, and an open road means either accepting that risk or actively controlling it.

Control involves triggering releases deliberately under managed conditions, which requires closing the road anyway and repeating the work after significant snowfall.

For a road whose main purpose is summer traffic, the sensible answer is a seasonal closure with barriers set at the last village on each side.

Reopening is governed by conditions, not dates

Clearing typically begins in spring when the risk of fresh loading falls, and crews work upward from both sides towards the summit.

The work is slower than it looks because accumulated snow on a high pass can be metres deep and must be cut rather than pushed.

Announced opening dates are therefore provisional. A late storm can push them back, and an early season can bring them forward by a similar margin.

Closures continue after opening

A pass that has opened can close again temporarily during a spring snowfall, and those closures are decided at short notice by the road authority.

Winter equipment requirements often remain in force after reopening, since conditions at the summit differ sharply from those in the valley below.

Some passes also restrict certain vehicle types permanently, particularly long or heavy combinations, because of gradient and hairpin geometry.

The reliable approach is to check the road authority's status page shortly before travelling rather than relying on a published seasonal date.

Building an alternative into the plan matters most where the detour is long, as valley routes around a closed pass can add hours.
