What the tests actually look for

Rainfall is the dominant short-term driver

Heavy rain washes material from fields, streets and drains into rivers, and rivers deliver it to the coast within hours or days.

Where storm systems combine surface water and sewage, exceptional rainfall can trigger overflow discharges designed to protect treatment works from being overwhelmed.

That is why advisories often appear after storms even at beaches with an excellent long-term record. The classification describes typical conditions, not conditions on a given afternoon.

Local geography shapes the risk

An enclosed bay with limited exchange holds contamination longer than an open shore with strong currents that disperse and dilute it quickly.

River mouths, harbours and marinas concentrate inputs, so sampling points are positioned where bathers actually enter the water rather than at an average location.

Two ends of the same beach can therefore carry different results, which is why the sampling point is published alongside the classification.

The classification is a multi-year judgement

Grades are usually calculated from several seasons of data, which prevents one unusual summer from destroying or flattering a beach's standing.

The trade-off is responsiveness: a beach that has genuinely improved takes time to be reclassified, and one that has deteriorated retains its grade for a while.

Waiting a day or two after heavy rain before swimming is the standard precaution at beaches fed by rivers or served by combined drainage.
