A rapid graded at one level in a guidebook can behave very differently on the day. Grade describes a river at a particular flow, and flow is the variable that changes everything.
Flow is measured, not estimated
Gauges report the volume passing a point over time, and paddling communities translate those readings into a usable range for each run.
A river has a minimum below which it is too shallow and a maximum above which it becomes unmanageable, and the interesting behaviour sits between the two.
Because the gauge is a single number for a whole reach, local knowledge of what that number means on a specific rapid remains essential.
Rising water can simplify or complicate
More water covers rocks, which removes the technical problem of picking a line between obstacles. In that sense a rapid can become easier to read as levels rise.
At the same time speed increases, eddies shrink or disappear, and the consequences of a mistake grow because there is less opportunity to recover before the next feature.
A rapid can therefore drop in technical grade while rising sharply in seriousness, which is why grade and consequence are discussed separately.
New hazards appear at high water
Flood levels push the river into vegetation and onto banks, creating strainers where trees and branches allow water through but stop a body or a boat.
Weirs and other artificial features can develop powerful recirculating hydraulics at particular flows, holding objects rather than flushing them downstream.
These hazards are not represented in a grade at all, because grading describes the difficulty of the moves rather than the nature of what goes wrong.
Low water introduces different problems
Falling levels expose rock, which makes lines narrower and more technical and increases the chance of pinning a boat between obstacles at slow speed.
Undercuts and sieves become more relevant, and a swim that would be harmless in deep water can involve impact in a shallow channel.
Cold-water runs at low flow also lengthen the time on the water, which turns exposure into a limiting factor on a long day.
How paddlers actually decide
The practical routine is to check the gauge, compare it with recorded ranges for the run, and then confirm on arrival by looking at known reference points on the bank.
Scouting from shore remains standard for anything near the limit of a group's ability, because a description written at a different level does not transfer.
Deciding to walk a single rapid rather than the whole run is normal practice, and portage routes are part of how these rivers are described.
